The Group

BharatBhasha BharatBhasha is a "not for profit" initiative wedded to localization of computers in India. Our main We all believe that whatever one can do on computers in English language, one can do in Indian languages also. All of us, associated with BharatBhasha, want to enable people to work on computers in our own languages rather than having to learn English language to be able to work on it. This is, perhaps, the only way to ensure that the IT benefits in India reaches other than the privileged 5 % of our polulation.

All of us at Bharatbhasha are committed to the cause of Indian Languages on Computers. We all work as individuals in our own fields and raise the issue at all levels (Student community, Industry and the Govt.) in different forums (Meetings, Seminars & Press) and render FREE help to anyone who wants to work on Computers in Indian Languages.

We also believe that there should not be any extra cost in making the Indian Language facilities available on computers. Therefore, we offer these facilities and help for FREE. We recognize that individual would like to develop his/her application in Indian language and charge money. They are free to charge whatever they want for the applications developed by them but we will offer them free help. We are not committed to any technology, standard, method, product or procedure to facilitate this work. We welcome all approaches and efforts. However, we will do all we can to resolve differences between the different approaches and to provide a platform to help in arriving at consensus on the different issues and in evolving new standards wherever and whenever required.

We started working as a group in 1997 with just three members, Mrs. Devika Kumar, Mr. Harsh Kumar and Mr. Venkatesh Hariharan. At present we have over 30 members.

Since 1997 we have put on our site FREE solutions, “Shusha” system and software for use of computers in Indian languages (Hindi, Marathi, Gujrati, Gurmukhi and Bangla). One could use it to for sending E-Mail, typing, development of Web (Hypertext) pages and Application Development in these languages on Windows. The site also contains the “Key Board” mapping and detailed “How To” and source code of a Multi-lingual application for facilitating this work. A very large number of people have downloaded the software from the site and are using it. The system was enabled for typing and sending mails on Linux in May 1999 and in July 2000  it was enabled for application development on Linux in Indian languages.

In December 1999 we were registered with the Dy. Charity Commissioner, Mumbai as a Public Charitable Trust with Mrs. Devika Kumar as the founding trustee. Should you need to contact us please send mail to Mrs. Devika Kumar or Mr. Bhavin Kadakia.
